WHAT IS ASPIRATION-DRIVEN STRATEGIC PLANNING™?
All organizations, even those in the same industry, exist to fulfill a unique vision and accomplish a special purpose, which is what makes one organization distinct from another.
An Aspiration-Driven Strategic Plan™ is a sustainable approach to visionary, purposeful growth driven by an organization’s ability to continuously adapt its business processes, structure and culture to fulfill the aspirations of its key constituencies in a balanced and equitable way.
ADSP™ is a demand-side growth strategy in which organizations focus on identifying the hopes, dreams and aspirations of each of the key constituencies on whom their sustainability depends and fulfilling those aspirations through continuously improving their business model and strategic plan, business processes, technology architecture and strategy, organization and job designs, talent acquisition and development strategy including succession and career planning, and culture.
Implicit in all of the above is the emergence of a leadership style more aptly described as one of service rather than command and control. Servant leaders realize the limits of their knowledge and skills. According to the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, servant leaders strive to create a culture characterized by “collaboration, trust, foresight, listening, and the ethical use of power and empowerment.” The servant leader’s goal is to get everyone actively engaged in helping the organization to adapt quickly to challenges in the environment, fostering innovation, creativity and growth. An ADSP™ is based on the metaphor of organization as living system and business environment as ecosytem, i.e., bionomics.
As most of us learned in psychology 101, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs are basic needs like food, water, air, rest and sex; safety needs such as security, physical comfort and economic well-being; social needs like acceptance, feelings of belonging, love, and affection; needs for esteem from others and from within our selves, and self-actualization, or the fulfillment of our potential, and the sense of peace and accomplishment that comes from that. Aspirations are found at all levels of human need, and they change depending on life’s circumstances so we have to learn to listen carefully for hopes, dreams and aspirations.
FIVE-POINT RATIONALE FOR AN ASPIRATION-DRIVEN STRATEGIC PLAN™
Business leaders demean their own humanity and hurt their psychological well being, not to mention that of their various constituencies, when they engage in business strategies that are selfish and fail to consider the human needs and aspirations of others in a balanced and equitable manner. By way of contrast, when they employ an Aspiration-Driven Strategic Plan™, they are dignifying their humanity and enhancing their psychological well being, as well as that of all their constituencies, because they are striving to achieve results that are balanced and equitable for all, leaving this earth a better place than they found it.

Most of us want to perform meaningful work for the greater good, and leave a positive legacy in this world. What better way to achieve that than by working to fulfill the aspirations of those who sustain us? As they contemplate retirement and mortality Baby Boomers are very mindful of these issues. Most organizations also aspire to fulfill a unique vision and mission that leaves a positive ‘foot print’ or legacy in this world. “Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) is a global organization that helps member companies achieve success in ways that respect ethical values, people, communities and the environment.”
With the emergence of ‘whole-systems’ thinking and ‘complex adaptive systems’ thinking in recent years, we have begun to look at organizations less as ‘machines’ and more as ‘living systems’ with many interdependent relationships on whose support the whole organization depends for innovation, adaptability and growth. Recognizing that their vitality depends on these relationships, ‘wholistic’ organizations seek to fulfill not only the aspirations of their investors and customers, but also those of their employees, suppliers and communities.
